The plan last Saturday was to go watch a movie and have dinner at a place somewhere selected from the Good Food Guide. It was a toss-up between Assiette and another restaurant also in Surry Hills. Assiette won out because on the day, they let us have a table at opening time (6pm). Lucky too, cause we think their degustation menu was great and I can’t rembember why we even considered anywhere else. We ended up watching the movie after 2 hours of delicious eating. Seriously these guys deserve any awards heaped on them, including the two Chef’s Hat rating from AGFG.
Most memorable moment from the degustation course was having the lamb breast, which was served with a large slab of melt-in-your-mouth FAT. I thought this much succulent lard was only possible from pork. One of Yam’s favourites was the mulloway which was nice and fresh and we both thought the egg plant puree was amazing (growing up, this was my favourite vegetable). Presentation was perfect, plenty of different complimenting tastes & textures on each plate and the dishes were so varied that we almost forgot we were at a French restaurant.
Btw, yes we’re suckers for degustation meals simply because we think we’re getting value for money. With 10 courses that looks and taste this good, that’s only $9.50 per dish!
Assiette is located in Surry Hills at 48 Albion Street, off Elizabeth Street. Tel 02 9212 7979.
