One of the first restaurants I had ever tried in Neutral Bay, Ginger & Spice has been a faved Singaporean food source for about a decade (maybe even more!). The place itself is located in the not-so-busy side of Military Road, closer to Cremorne, near the Redlands school and it’s not until the last couple of years that other restaurants have appeared nearby that have enough customer pull to become a permanent fixture in the neighbourhood.
Off Street Parking
As with all the restaurants around Neutral Bay, there’s no dedicated customer parking. You can chance Military Road itself, when spots are available during off peak hours but I would highly recommend parking on Waters Rd or nearby in the car park outside Woolworths, a short couple of minutes walk away.
Inside, the restaurant is not what I would call homely or inviting although the service itself is warm and friendly. As far as I can remember, the interior has remained the same but the good thing is, the vinegar smell which used to be fairly strong inside seems to have disappeared, leaving only the unadulterated smells to waft out of the kitchen.
Favourite Food from the Menu
Squid Kecap Manis at Ginger & Spice
Pretty much what we always come back for. The squid is nice and crunchy and the portions are generous. Depending on your appetite, one dish can be shared between 2-3 people easily, along with other dishes since eating kecap manis squid by itself might get off-putting for some people due to it being fried and sickeningly sweet if you have too much.
Kecap Manis which is used to coat the squid is a sweet, syrupy-type of soy sauce and might not appeal to some western palates. These days it’s found in most grocery stores and goes well on any recipe that you would need soy sauce which also also calls for some honey or sugar (for example a barbeque marinade or baste).
Another favourite, the portions at Ginger & Spice are larger than average with the chicken being well cooked through and through. Most Malaysians & Singaporeans will probably feel ripped off for what they are paying but it is a delicacy that we in Sydney don’t easily have access to. There’s also a bit of art in cooking it and I’ve found other places will take short cuts when preparing it.
